Fly Fishing for Cutthroats

Wow how times flies, It seems like just yesterday we were watching cutthroats rise to a fly in the Idaho mountains, and now here we are in October! Back in August we took a week and explored a local river and met with great success in casting a few flies and reeling in a few fish.

You can find the video from our trip here:

It was plenty hot so it was ideal to just wet wade (no waders, just shoes and shorts).

With the crystal clear water it was quite an experience to see fish rising, and with a decently placed cast see them come up and hit the fly.

With five days of fishing, some days were better than others, but we were able to catch fish each day. A few stretches of river yielded double digits with fish in nearly every pool and eddy.

These fish seemed to have an affinity for dry flies. I tried a few nymphs, but they were definitely looking up, which made it all the more fun. I had to restock my parachute adams after this trip as several of them fell apart from being hit so much.

It didn’t hurt that the backdrop to the river created the perfect scene for a mountain stream.

I think I can say this trip was the most fun I’ve had fly fishing. I’m going to say we’ll be back next summer. I hope they are still looking up.
