Salmon River, 2023

Steelhead on the Salmon River? Yeah, it might sound a bit strange, but that was what we were there for. Well, yes, there’s also the camping, being on the river, a bit of wildlife, time around the campfire, all in a place not too far from home. Throw in a chance for steelhead? Count us in. And yes, there are salmon as well, but that season was winding down while steelhead should be ramping up.

Video of our time on the Salmon, October and November 2023:

The Salmon River above Riggins is accessible by road until Vinegar Creek. After that you are either jet boating up or rafting down. We were doing neither this fall but we found plenty of riverbank to ourselves on two separate trips. What we didn’t find was any steelhead. Rainbow and bull trout, pikeminnow, bass yes, just no steelhead. Oh well, we had some nice sunsets, some time around the campfire, and even ran across a bit of local wildlife.

All in all, a pretty good way to spend a few days. I’m sure we’ll be back. Oh and the steelhead, well, we found them on the Clearwater, but that’s another post.

Speaking of posts, this is post number 200! Yep 200 posts since 2015. We have a handy index of them all if you want to jump back in time: https://www.occidentalist.org/blog-timeline/ When you look at the list it’s been quite an adventure so far. See you on the next one, unless we see you on the river, which is where we’re headed next (again).
