Yep, August is over.  Fire season means that we haven’t roamed to far but we have definitely been on the move.  Here’s a rundown.

First up, a quick trip down the McKenzie River.  Our wonderful fair intruded into the weekend but we were able to get on the river Sunday and enjoy the clean, clear water, plenty of fish and a relaxing day.

Next up was the Trek For Tuna.  I’ve never made it our on a tuna charter as things get hard to schedule in August when warm water bring tuna are close to shore, but we managed to sneak over and pick up a couple of fish off the dock for the freezer.  $3.00 a pound for some of the best fish you will ever eat is worth the trip.

We also enjoyed a few walks on the beach, some fresh grilled oysters, and a stellar campsite (we won’t mention the first camp, in fact I think I’ve already forgotten it…mostly, sniff…) with a hobbit trail to a front row seat to the ocean and completely cut off from the rest of the campground.  It was a bit foggy (and a tad windy) as it tends to be on the coast when it is reaching for 100 degrees inland, but it was a good break for sure.

We even were able to get a midweek trip up Paulina Peak to enjoy a dinner and sunset.  Terrible views up there.

Then it was up to the crest of the Cascades to Irish and Taylor Lakes for a high mountain get away on a hot weekend.  More fish there than you can shake a rod at and they were on the bite.  Great place to paddle the inflatable kayak too.  It’s just a little rough on the goat trail that is considered a road to get you there.  Keeps the riff-raff out, mostly.

The last stop on the ride this month was a trip back to Odell.  Every time I go back I love it more.  We managed another limit on Saturday (50 fish!) and lost at least that many but probably more.  All done by 12:30 or so, except for the filleting, which takes a while.  Sunday was a bit slower but we managed 32 by 10:30.  19 total pounds of fillets!  It surprised me to have so many people come up to the cleaning station to ask what kind of fish we had.  I hope they never taste a kokanee…or see the mountain from the lake…otherwise it is going to be a bit crowded.

Whew, August was a whirlwind.   I think we had a good month.
