Northeast Oregon, 2022

Spring in Oregon was wet. That’s relevant here for a couple reasons. When planning out our early summer we put a couple river trips on the calendar. We had already cancelled a trip on the John Day due to high flows, and as we approached our dates for the Grande Ronde flows were similarly high. What could we do instead? We decided to still head to the northeast corner of the state, but we morphed our plans into a road trip.

Winter Camping, 2022

Now that winter (meteorological winter) has passed it is time for a quick roundup of a few trips we were able to pull off in the last days of January and the month of February. To Ft. Rock and Back

The Bend Fort Rock Ranger District on the Deschutes National Forest used to be two districts. From 1921 to 1945 the Ft. Rock District was headquartered in Cabin Lake north of the town of Ft. Rock.

We spent a weekend exploring the old Ft. Rock side of the Deschutes, along with some adjacent BLM land. A few highlights were Oregon’s largest juniper tree and Derrick Cave.
